School Announcements:

January PTO meeting – The January PTO meeting will be this Thursday, Jan. 15th. Our meeting will be preceded by a special presentation about our Bucketfillers program, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. The PTO meeting will follow immediately afterward. As always, fun & free childcare will be provided in the Gym. We hope you can join us!

Science Olympiad – Science Olympiad Team Sign Up time is now!! If your child is in 2nd grade through 5th grade, you should have found the sign up sheet for Burns Park’s Science Olympiad Team in their backpack this past Friday (or today)! Please return completed sign up forms to the Burns Park office by Friday (Jan. 30th). We’d like to thank those parents who came forward to work as Event Supervisors this year to so that B.P. could participate in this year’s Science Olympiad. They are Meg Wallace, Abigail Hohner, and Mary Anne Purtill. Picture Re-takes – Picture re-takes will be on Tuesday, November 18th. If you would like your child’s picture retaken, just send in the original pictures in the envelope they came in on this day, and have your child give them to his/her teacher.

Sally Foster Gift Wrap SaleDeadline extended to Friday, October 17.  Burns Park will receive 55% of every order to support Golden Apple Grants and field trips.  Orders can be placed in the collection box in the office.  All checks should be made out to Burns Park School and please do not add tax to the orders.  Please remember to complete the order form in full, especially with the student’s name.  If you are ordering online, please enter the school’s account number 253593 so Burns Park gets credit for the order.

School Announcements:

Halloween Costume Donation Drive – Each year Burns Park families donate Halloween costumes which are given to students without costumes to wear in the all-school parade and to take home and wear that night to trick or treat. If you have a gently used costume (sizes from Youth XS to XL) that you would like to donate, please place it in the box labeled “Halloween Costume Drive” outside of the auditorium. Students in need of a costume will have an opportunity to select a costume from the box on Halloween day.

School Announcements:

Summer Learning Program Award Assemblies – Thank you to all the families who participated in the Summer Learning Program! We have 181 medals to award to students for completing 50% or more of their workbooks. The first and second grade assembly will be Friday, October 10 from 9:00 – 9:15 am; the third, fourth and fifth grade assembly will be Tuesday, October 7 from 3:15 – 3:30 pm. Both assemblies will be in the auditorium – parents are welcome to attend. Questions? Helen Starman (hstarman at comcast dot net or 994-8553).

Burns Park Used Book Sale & Silent Auction – Saturday, October 18 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. The sale will benefit the Burns Park Media Center and The Karen Thomas Memorial Fund (Karen’s son Jonathon is in 5th grade at Burns Park) which supports literacy programs for underprivileged students in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. The silent auction will feature many rare and first edition books, please visit our website for more details about these books. We need your help with the following:

Science Olympiad Event Descriptions

2009 Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad Event Descriptions

A Is for Anatomy (all grades): Each team will view models, slides, and pictures of organs and tissues from the human body. They will identify and explain the function of each.

Barge Building (2nd grade): Participants will construct a barge using aluminum foil that can support a cargo of the largest number of weighted objects (e.g. pennies) without getting them wet.

Science Olympiad Volunteer Positions

Burns Park Science Olympiad Team Volunteer Positions

The Science Olympiad is run completely by volunteers. One parent or guardian (or other designated adult) of each student will be required to volunteer to help with the team or the tournament. Listed below are volunteer position descriptions.

Next Year’s Head Coach: Volunteer to coordinate the Burns Park Team for the 2009-10 school year. This season, Next Year’s Head Coach can assist the 2009 Head Coach to learn the ropes.
